Gateway College introduces BTEC in Sport

Gateway College has introduced BTEC First in Sport as an option for students taking OL/IGCSE. The qualification is designed to enable students to study this course alongside their other IGCSE subjects. The achievement of the BTEC First Certificate has the equivalence of 2 GCSEs graded A*-C.

Over the years, Gateway has developed and strengthened their sports, and is considered to be one of the most reputed International Schools in the country. The school has produced a number of sports men and women of international repute. Last year, eight Gateway students received national colours and among them were Shehan Ambepitiya, the outstanding sportsman of the year and Miniruwani Samarakoon, the up and coming sports woman of the year.

The school management has embarked on this programme to encourage the sports loving students to gain a grounding in the essential skills and broad fundamentals crucial to this area of study. The BTEC First in Sport provides a suitable foundation for further study within the sector through progression on to qualifications such as the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Nationals in Sport and Sport and Exercise Sciences.

Edexcel is UK’s largest awarding body that is a part of Pearson plc, provides a wide range of academic and vocational qualifications. Speaking at the inauguration, Vivek Govil, CEO Pearson India said “Over the last 25 years, BTECs have been used to help millions of people develop the skills they need to get on in life. But in recent years, the BTEC success story has started an exciting new chapter in schools”. Premila Paulraj Canisious, Territory Manager - India Subcontinent, Edexcel said that she is pleased to see this new opportunity for school children to receive vocational qualifications whilst pursuing an academic career. Mr. Somabandu Kodikara, the Head Master of Gateway College, Colombo said that through this new qualification Gateway is now able to offer more choices for their students.
